my biography
PASSION...
My passion is to take traditional pathways, whether they are in career development or in an educational environment and re-design these pathways in a whole new way.
There is nothing better than taking a new idea, concept or approach, one with a blurry, distant vision then have it blossom into something real, concrete and tangible.
Especially… when no one else thought it possible.
BIO...
I have been a career and academic counselor for over 20 years, working primarily with the college population. During that time, I have provided career counseling, academic advising, and taught college courses in career development, educational planning, student success and kinesiology. I have facilitated faculty workshops, coordinated the campus career center and designed curriculum using social and immersive technologies.
I am also the Principal Consultant for Cheryl Carter Consulting, a career counseling and educational consulting firm located in the San Francisco Bay Area. My consulting firm offers two distinctive branches of service, Arête Services for elite athletes and Gnōsis Services for educators.
Arête Services works closely with elite athletes to assist in the determination of their post-athletic career aspirations. After working through a series of career development steps, we then take those aspirations to create a strategic career transition plan unique to the individual athlete. Gnōsis Services offers professional development training and consulting services for student services professionals in the planning and design of virtual support services for their students.
As an author, I finally got around to writing Nurturing Dreams: A Parent’s Guide to Career Development for Children available on Amazon. The genesis of my book was sparked by a newspaper interview conducted years ago where the reporter asked when (ideally) a person should begin the career development process. When I responded “around the age of ten,” she showed up at my career center about a year later with a group of ten-year old girl scouts in tow. Nurturing Dreams guides parents through the basic steps of career exploration so that they can help their children discover their interests along with the resources and activities that can help to encourage a child’s personal development.
My work has given me the opportunity to present at conferences and events sponsored by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), California Community College Online Teaching Conference, International Association K-12 for Online Learning (iNACOL), American Educational Research Association (AERA), and The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C).
My educational background includes Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Master of Science in Kinesiology (Sports Psychology/Sports History), Master of Science in Counseling (Career Development) and Doctor of Education in Educational Technology. I am a member of the California Career Development Association (CCDA), National Career Development Association (NCDA) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
